Week 20

It looks like the last day of the CSA will coincide with our last day of dryness.  I don't love working in the rain, but I am ready for it.

Thanks for joining us on what was a pretty wild ride on our end.  We are so appreciative of the trust you all put in us. We will be at the Oly market on Saturday and Sunday for another month.  If you have CSA credit, the sooner you use it, the better the selection will be.

We hope you all have a wonderful winter.

Week 19

I was just scrolling through the internet looking for some dinner inspiration.  I saw a leek and goat cheese tart recipe and I remembered that I never posted the box contents.  The leeks and the celery root have me pretty excited.  The leeks are gorgeous and big, same with the celery root.  These are not vegetables we are good at growing.  We haven't actually harvested either of them yet so my excitement may turn into disappointment.  Fingers crossed!

Celery Root - The leaves are good for stock and the root part is great for soups, roasts, pot pies, chowders and many more things.  It can also be eaten raw.

Spaghetti Squash

Potatoes - Taste great, don't look great - can't have it all.  Although we do shoot for looks and flavor and try pretty hard to achieve it, this isn't the year for gorgeous potatoes.

Week 17

Happy Autumn!

The farm is doing great despite us losing three employees in August.  I know we aren't alone in our labor struggles.  This was year three of labor shortages and the worst yet for us.  Last year started off rough but ended with our best crew ever.  I am not sure what we can do next year.   We did our best to manage the situation.  I am really looking forward to getting all the squash out this week and hopefully potatoes next week.  That should actually bring a little free time for projects.  We are so close to being in a better place. We are loving our new farm.  We walked to the river to celebrate the first day of fall and I see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Still a ton of amazing veggies out there to harvest.  You will get delicata next week!

Week 11

It is full on summer around here.  It is a struggle to find time to do anything other than harvest.  Even though we are still waiting on melons, the ultimate summer treat, there are also signs that fall is just around the corner.  The onions are starting to fall and the days are noticeably shorter.   Enjoy the veggies!

Week 9

I am excited for normal summer weather this week.  Most of the veggies handled the heat fine with a couple exceptions.  We weren't motivated to do much cooking last week but we did use the air fryer feature in our new oven to cook some buffalo cauliflower that we added to a huge salad.  We also ate our first BLT of the season.  The tomato season is off to a slow start but you should be seeing some bigger tomatoes soon.

We hope you all enjoyed the produce last week.  New potatoes are one of my favorite things.  I was hoping for cherry tomatoes this week for you all, but I don't think we will have enough.  Next week though, they will be in your boxes for sure.  Thinking my first dip in the river will be this week. It has to be really hot for me to want to swim - this is my week!  Hope you all are finding ways to enjoy or beat the heat.

Week 3

We said goodbye to Britt, one of our favorite employees last week.  She is the type of person that just made the farm a better place to work for the crew and for Kel and I.  All spring we have been joking about having Nutria Fest(we have them in our creek).  I genuinely want to eat one at least once, but all the other ideas like everyone wearing a giant rat tail were all just us being silly and passing time while doing tedious work.  Britt took it upon herself to create a poster on her phone.  She found a Nutria photo online and added a bright pink Hawaiian shirt and cargo shorts.  On her last day she secretly hung a four foot by six foot poster version up in our barn.  How can you not miss someone like that.  It also left us desperate for help.  Her leaving the farm at about 25 percent of the labor it needs to run smoothly.  We skipped the Chehalis market for two weeks just to make sure we didn't let our future plantings get overrun with weeds.  We ended up hiring three more people in the last six days.  I always think things will work out on the farm because they always have, but I was starting to freak out a bit.  I feel very relieved right now.

You may not have any invasive species on your menu this week, but hopefully you eat some nice meals.

Week 1

Greens!

Red Leaf Lettuce

Green Garlic - You can use the whole thing, top to bottom.  I whizzed the greens and some olive oil together and put it on pizza - delicious.  It is a bit milder than cured garlic but still zingy if used raw.

Radishes

Red Russian Kale - Large Only

Herb - Large Only

We are short on crew and the weather has been a little nutty, but the veggies are doing well.  Pulled a few carrots for the weekend market and they are coming along.  We will include them and lacinato kale in next week's box.

My goal is to get this posted on Sunday.  I am currently doing the market both Saturday and Sunday so it will most likely be posted late Sunday or first thing Monday.

We hope you enjoy your first week of veggies.  Thank you.
