The past couple cool mornings have really felt autumn like. We had the treat of seeing a couple river otters in our pond this past weekend. There is also a great white egret keeping the blue herons company and yesterday we saw some greater white fronted geese on the Chehalis. . I am not an avid birder but I do love seeing the different birds come through this time of year. It is a reminder that fall is well underway.

September, one of my favorite months on the farm, starts off with all the familiarity of August and ends with winter squash harvest and a little relaxation.

Ten years ago Kelly and I had a very small wedding in our back yard. At the time we thought getting married in August would be a good excuse to step back each year and take a moment for ourselves. Kelly even wrote it in his vows. Well, we had good intentions, but each year the day comes and goes like every other day in August. This year we spent the day together at the UDistrict market, but we did make a point of doing some fun things this week. Ten years seemed like we should make a little extra effort. Here we are in mid August with the days getting shorter and summer slipping away. I hope you all are making the most of summer before it is gone.
We should have some green beans next week!

Was three weeks of potatoes one too many? I originally had carrots in my plan for last week but then the purple potatoes just looked and tasted so good I switched it up. I would like to think our potatoes will continue to look good, but I am 90 percent certain they will never look or taste better than they do now.
The farm is humming right along and we are in full August mode. Hope to have some slicing tomatoes in your boxes soon.

We have been doing salad Fridays on the farm. I started making a salad on Fridays in the spring when we had early greens. Those first March greens are one of my favorite memories from the first year I started working on a farm. I let it fall by the wayside after a few salads, but a couple people on the crew were game to keep it going. Last week Clare made a coleslaw and it reminded me how good simple things can be. All it had was cabbage, carrots and a mayo based dressing and it was delicious. The cabbage really is at its prime right now. Fall cabbage is great, but spring cabbage is so tender and juicy.

I am sure you all eat well year round, but hopefully you are about to feel like you are eating even better! I am pretty stoked with the first box.
We have a great core crew, but things were starting to get a little wild looking around here as we struggled to balance harvest with weeding. We have three new people starting this week and I think we should be able to get everything into shape.
If any of the produce you get is bad/damaged, I encourage you to reach out and let me know. We try very hard to keep our quality high, but things slip by us on occasion.
Feel free to send me recipes you made. I really enjoy hearing about the food you make with your produce.
Thank you for supporting local agriculture.

Frisee - Large Only Maybe it is a good week for a salade Lyonnaise. There aren't too many salads that I feel like satisfy me enough to call a meal but this one does. This is the first time we have grown frisee in the spring. The one we ate was less bitter than I typically think of it being.
